Things To Do While In The High Country

 Whether you're planning to visit for some energetic activities, or prefer to spend your days in quiet enjoyment of nature's beauty, the Victorian Inn Blowing Rock is centrally located to make for easy exploring of Boone, Appalachian State University, Banner Elk and the historic district of Valley Crucis (home of the original Mast General Store).  Four seasons of activities make our region the perfect getaway whatever the time of year.

 SPRING ACTIVITIES IN THE HIGH  COUNTRY

What to Expect:
Spring gets to the Blue Ridge Mountains slowly. However, the weather seems to know when the ski season is over and it suddenly gets warmer. It’s April in the mountains, so expect to experience all four seasons and pack accordingly. These days are glorious with no humidity or haze to limit the views! Temperatures can run from 40 to 70.  May brings long warm days and cool nights with trees and flowers coming into bloom. Memorial Day is the traditional start of the high season.  June is the time to come if you want to get in before the summer crowds and get some great deals.

Ideas:
• Hike the Linville Falls trails to see the waterfalls full with Spring rain and melting snow
• Bring your road (Appalachian & Parkway routes) or mountain bike (Benson Hollow, 18 Mile Ride or Buckeye Trail)
• Attend a play or concert by local groups such as the Blowing Rock Stage Company.
• Walking or hiking - we've got hundreds of miles of trails - from horizontal to vertical!
• Call for a tee-time at a local Golf Course and take advantage of some excellent terrain.

Blue Ridge Wine Festival - A three day celebration of the wines made in or influenced by the unique terrior of the Blue Ridge mountains.  Limited tickets available.

Celtic Festival - Featuring Celtic bands and crafts, food, dancing, kid's activities and more.   The Guildof St. Andrew of North Carolina recreates the ambiance, intrigue, and pageantry of the 16th century noble and royal life, with particular emphasis on the Court of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.

Merlefest - The Americana Music Celebration! MerleFest began in the spring of 1988 and has grown from two flat-bed trailers and 4,000 attendees to 13 stages with more than 81,500 festival participants.  Doc & Merle Watson’s musical style and heritage have been cited many times as the primary reason why musical diversity has become a hallmark of MerleFest. The eclectic blending of style and tradition remains evident in the selection of artists who have performed at the festival.

 SUMMER ACTIVITIES IN THE HIGH COUNTRY
What to Expect:

July and August bring hotter days but the temperatures don't often get to 80. Mosquitoes need still ponds to breed and most of our water runs down hill - so they're simply not a problem. There is so much here to do in the summer and places can be very busy especially on weekends. For a quieter time, come during the week!  Days are warm, ideal for picnics, hikes and canoeing while nights are cool (bring a sweater). After Labor Day the roads are a lot quieter making scenic drives more pleasant. Early to mid-September is definitely the best time to visit. Though the temperatures may be a little more unpredictable, the crowds are gone.

July 4th Weekend - Come and spend Independence Day in the mountains with a great fireworks display, activities in the park and a parade on Main Street that would do Norman Rockwell proud.


Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show -
The Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show is one of the oldest horse show events in the country and has been a Blowing Rock tradition since 1923.  Two weeks of Hunter/Jumper competition followed by a week of Saddlebred contests. Blowing Rock Equestrian


Grandfather Mountain Highland Games -

An Appalachian Summer Festival, presented annually by Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, is emerging as one of the nation's most innovative and highly regarded regional, multidisciplinary arts festivals. Now entering its twenty-second season, the festival is committed to showcasing American talent, commissioning new works, and building new audiences for the fine arts.  FALL ACTIVITIES IN THE HIGH COUNTRY
What to Expect:

Temperatures are variable by late September and it can be rainy and cool one day, only to be followed by an 70F day the next. The leaves are starting to turn by the middle of September and you'll see color appearing consistently around the area.  Foliage season really peaks into the second week in October, around Columbus Day weekend - the busiest weekend of the year. Everything is busy so if you're planning on leaf-peeping that weekend, book well in advance. With warmer days and cooler nights, bring layers!  Mid November sees the start of the winter season and the run up to the holidays!

Ideas:
• Get in a last round or two of Golf at reduced rates
• Look for end of season bargains in our many antique stores
• Get out into the countryside along one of the many scenic drives - itineraries available
• Shop for holiday gifts at local boutiques, galleries and outlets in the High Country

Sunday Concert in the Park Series -
Free concerts in the Gazebo in the park set the mood for a small street festival.

Octoberfest -
Activities include traditional Octoberfest German music, food & beverages; children's activities, local and regional crafts and more.

Annual Valle Country Fair -
A traditional, old style fair with craftspeople, demonstrations and mountain music.  The Valle Country Fair gives a true sense of what life was like in this National Historic District.

Wooly Worm Festival -
The world famous Wooly Worm festival draws thousands of visitors to the mountains of North Carolina during the peak fall leaf season. Join in the fun and excitement of racing your own worm for a chance of winning the $1,000 First Place award on Saturday and the $500 First Place winning worm prize on Sunday. The ultimate goal of winning the big races on Saturday is that the winning worm is used to predict the winter season weather for the mountain region.

 WINTER ACTIVITIES IN THE HIGH COUNTRY
What to Expect:

Winter in the Blue Ridge Mountains begins just after Thanksgiving and with any luck, we will shortly have some snow! In December, the weather isn't really cold yet but expect some days below freezing. On the other hand, temperatures in the 50s are not unknown. 

January is our coldest month with short but generally sunny days. If you're hardy, this can be a great month for skiing. 

February brings warmer days and our heaviest snowfalls providing great conditions for all winter sports enthusiasts. March is fun - enough snow to keep us going till the end of the month and longer warmer days in which to enjoy the outdoors. Most ski resorts close at the end of March.

Winterfest - The Southeast Tourism Society has confirmed what we already knew:  Blowing Rock Winterfest is "THE" place to be January. Winterfest has been selected as one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast for the month of January.  From the Wine Auction, Dog Sledding and Live Bluegrass, to the Chili Cook-Off, Kids' Activities and the Polar Plunge in a frozen Lake, there's something for everyone!
